Ontario Vehicle Inspection Performance Standards

A simplified guide to the official performance standards under subsection 107(3) of the Highway Traffic Act.

Body, Sheet Metal & Equipment

Ensure all external and internal vehicle components are securely mounted, intact, and free of hazards.

  • No missing or loose bumpers, fenders, or mudguards
  • No sharp edges or protrusions
  • Seats and seatbelts must be secure and functional
  • No damaged or missing safety equipment

Doors & Emergency Exits

All doors must function correctly, open/close securely, and emergency exits must be accessible and operational.

  • Doors must open freely and latch securely
  • Emergency exits must be clearly marked and functional
  • Warning systems and interlocks must operate correctly

Chassis, Frame & Underbody

Structural integrity must be maintained with no corrosion or loose components.

  • No cracked or rusted frame components
  • No missing fasteners
  • Underbody must not be perforated

Mirrors, Glass & Visibility

Driver visibility must not be impaired by damage or obstructions.

  • Mirrors must be secure and functional
  • Windshield must be free of major cracks or chips
  • No obstruction in driver’s field of vision

Fuel & Exhaust Systems

Fuel and exhaust systems must be secure, leak-free, and safely positioned.

  • No missing or loose components
  • No leaks or unsafe routing
  • Exhaust must exit beyond vehicle body

Braking System

Brakes must function correctly with no leaks, excessive wear, or performance issues.

  • No hydraulic, air, or vacuum leaks
  • Brake linings must meet minimum thickness
  • Air pressure systems must operate within limits

Vehicle must steer correctly with no excessive play or worn components.

  • No excessive steering play
  • All linkage components must be secure
  • Suspension components must not be damaged or worn
